Privacy Policy

What we collect, why we collect it, and the control you have — aligned with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and the DPDP Rules 2025.

What we collect

Account details you give us: name, email, phone and password (stored only as a one-way hash — we never see or store your actual password).

Activity you create: saved businesses, reviews, bookings, enquiries and searches.

Technical data: an approximate location only when you grant permission, plus hashed device and IP identifiers used for abuse prevention and analytics.

Why we collect it

To show you relevant nearby businesses, to run the features you use, to keep the platform free of fake listings and reviews, and to meet our legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal data.

Consent

Every consent decision you make — location, marketing, cookies, terms — is recorded with a timestamp and the policy version in force at the time, and can be withdrawn at any point.

Your rights, and how to use them yourself

Access (s.11): sign in and go to My Account → Your data to download everything held against your account as a single JSON file. It is generated live, so it is never out of date, and it never contains your password — that is stored only as a one-way hash.

Correction (s.12): edit your name, email and phone directly on My Account. Corrections take effect immediately.

Erasure (s.12): My Account → Your data → Delete my account removes your account permanently. It asks for your password and a typed confirmation because it cannot be undone, and it shows you exactly what will be deleted, what will be anonymised and what will happen to any business listings you own before you confirm.

Grievance redressal (s.13) and nomination (s.14): you may raise any concern with our Grievance Officer, named below, and you may nominate another person to exercise these rights on your behalf in the event of death or incapacity. Write to the Grievance Officer to register a nominee.

Anything you submitted while signed out — a contact form, an enquiry or a review left as a guest — carries no link to any account, so we cannot attribute it to you from the data alone. The Grievance Officer will locate and remove it on request.

What erasure actually does

Deleted outright: your profile, saved businesses, search history, enquiries, support messages, ownership claims, upcoming bookings and consent records.

Kept without your name on it: the star rating on each review you wrote, and the fact of a booking that has already happened. Your name, your account link and the review text are removed and the review shows as “Former Updatesee member”. We keep the rating because other people chose where to spend money on the strength of those averages, and because ratings that vanished when an account closed would make bad ones trivially purchasable. We remove the text because written prose cannot reliably be stripped of personal detail.

Business listings you own are not deleted with you. A listing is a record about a business — its name, address and hours — carrying other people's reviews and saved places, so it stays published and is released as unclaimed: your link to it is removed, it loses its verified and claimed status, and any contact detail on it that was your personal email or phone is cleared. The one exception is a listing you entered yourself that was never published and that nobody has reviewed, saved, booked or enquired about — that is your submission alone and goes with your account.

Aggregated figures that no longer identify anyone — daily search totals, listing view counters — are outside both export and erasure, because they are no longer personal data.

Retention

We keep personal data only as long as the purpose requires it. Search history is reduced to anonymous daily totals after 90 days and consent records are discarded after two years.

There is no grace period on a deleted account and no archived copy: a "recoverable" deletion would simply be more retention after you had asked us to stop. What we do keep is a record that the request was made and honoured — its date, the number of rows affected in each table, and a keyed pseudonym. No name, no email, no content.
